Shasta Splash Dogs Redding CA

We are a group of local North Valley people with a very intense interest in the sport of canine dock jumping.

What is canine dock jumping?

It’s like a dog drag race and long jump combination. The dog accelerates to top speed down a 40’ dock and hurls himself as high and as far as he can into the water.

Those jumps are measured for distance, AND THE COMPETITION IS ON!!

In competitions across the country, thousands of dog and handler teams come for the fun and recognition of their training talents.

Shasta Splash Dogs club members are among the thousands that enjoy this extreme dog sport and we want to share it with our community!

Gypsy is owned and handled by Ralph and Barbara Darrow of Redding,  CA. Gypsy was born on May 5, 2003 on a working ranch in Cottonwood, CA. She refused to jump off the dock for three years, just didn't want to go. We tried her occasionally, just in case she changed her mind. Finally in summer of 2006 she decided to jump. After very little training, she earned her Senior Jumper Title in Auburn in 2006, in one weekend. She is also an accomplished flyball racer. She races for Strike Force Flyball Racing Club in Redding, and has earned her FD, FDX, FDCH, FDCH Silver, FDCH Gold, FM, and FMX titles. She is a therapy dog for Prescription Pets and is visiting patients in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. She has also been introduced to agility, herding, Frisbee and Canine Freestyle Dance, though she doesn’t not compete in those sports. Gypsy is a bit intense, and obsesses over cell phones, blow dryers, websters, and water hoses.

Reno is owned by Ralph and Barbara Darrow of Redding, CA, and handled by Ralph Darrow.

Reno was born October 15, 2005 to the Bobula family of Dayton, NV. He is the son of Gabe the Flying Border Collie of dock jumping fame, and competed for the first time in September of 2006 in Auburn, CA. Since then, he has competed in September, 2007 at Diamond Lake, OR coming in first in his Division. At ISE Sacramento 2008 he competed in the Pro Division finals, coming in 7th overall. He is currently retired from competitive dock jumping, and enjoys jumping with the other family dogs into Whiskeytown Lake during club practices.

He competes for Strike Force Flyball Racing Club in Redding, CA. He has his FD, FDX, FDCH, FDCH Silver and FDCH Gold, FM, and FMX flyball titles. He shows great promise in sheep herding. He has also been introduced to Frisbee, Agility, and Canine Freestyle Dancing.  Reno has a delightful, clownish personality that keeps his human family in constant chuckles. When Reno is involved, you never quite know what to expect!

Cody is a Jack Russell Terrier (JRT) born on Halloween in 2004.  Cody is owned and handled by Bob Ekin of Redding.  Cody measures in at 15-inches tall and weighs about 23 pounds.  Cody is a very active dog with a keen focus and ambitious attitude.  Cody is considered a tri-athlete participating in dock jumping and Flyball as primary competition sports, and lure coursing with other JRTs and sight-hounds for fun.  Cody has earned his Junior title through Splash Dogs and his Junior Jumper title through Shasta Splash jumping up to 17' 0" in competition.  In 2006, Cody was the No. 1 JRT under Splash Dogs sanctioning and No. 2 JRT in 2007.  Cody is a member of Strike Force Flyball Racing Team.  Through the North American Flyball Association (NAFA) Cody has earned his Flyball Dog (FD), Flyball Dog Excellent (FDX), Flyball Dog Champion (FDCh), Flyball Dog Champion Silver (FDCh-S), and Flyball Dog Champion Gold (FDCh-G) titles.  Through the United Flyball League International (U-FLI) Cody has earned his Top Flight Level I, II, and III titles. Cody’s hobbies include playing Frisbee, swimming, and playing with his family kids and his sibling Anna, a one year old JRT.  Cody enjoys television shows such as Animal Planet’s Ultimate Dog Championship, Animal Precinct, and Meerkat Manor.

Blaze  - Einstein’s Blaze is loved, owned and handled by Ralph and Barbara Darrow of Redding. Blaze was born on Valentine’s Day, 2008. She is a tri smooth coat Border Collie from working lines. Blaze came to live with us on May 1, 2008, the same day we lost our beloved Einstein. She gave us joy amidst our grief. Blaze has been in training for both flyball and dock jumping. She competed several times in 2009 and we look forward to competing more in 2010. She should be racing for Strike Force Flyball Racing Club of Redding in 2010. She keeps us very busy, and is running Gypsy and Reno ragged.

Skyy is a 3 year old female yellow lab, born 8/26/05 in Redding, CA.  She is owned and handled by Janet Friebel. Our original intent was for her to become a duck dog, but she decided she would rather be a dock dog.  She has an intense desire to retrieve and loves the water. Her formal splash dog training began in April 2008 and she took to jumping off the dock immediately.  She placed 3rd in the Open Finals at the 2008 Shasta District Fair and placed 6th in the Open Finals at the 2009 International Sportsman Expo in San Mateo. Her personal best jump is 16'2”, which we are hoping to improve with time. Skyy received her Senior Splash Title in January of 2009. Her favorite pastime activity is playing with her golden retriever sisters Roxy and Whitney.  She loves to go on walks, camping with her family and swimming in the backyard pool.

Roxy is a 5 year old female golden retriever born January 30, 2004 in Red Bluff, CA.   She is owned and handled by Janet Friebel.  She is somewhat new to the sport of dock jumping.  Roxy’s formal splash dog training began August of 2008 and she is still in training.  She has not competed in any Splash Dog Events as of yet, but has unofficially jumped 10 feet in her Shasta Splash Dogs class.  We are hoping to have Roxy jump in her first Splash Dog Event this year.

Roxy is a very timid, sweet girl. She is always carrying her baby bunny(stuffed animal)in her mouth.   She loves to go on walks, camping, swimming and playing with her dog sisters Skyy and Whitney.

J.D. is a two year old Queensland Heeler / Australian Kelpie cross, He was born on September 6th 2008. He is owned and handled by Chuck Jucker.

He was meant to be a stock working dog, but he decided he liked the water better than working with cows. He began dock training in the spring of 2009 and took to jumping off the dock immediately. J.D. has not made an official jump yet but in class he jumped 14' 2" for his graduation jump. J.D.’s favorite pastime activities are playing with his ball, chewing up empty toilet paper rolls and playing with his older dog brother Maxx.

Pearl is a McNabb who just turned a year old sometime around March '09.  She was treasure found at Haven Humane, the find of a lifetime for Laura Foxworthy.  She's scary smart, wicked fast, and freakishly tall & lanky!  She just keeps growing!  Her obsession is the tennis ball & water, which all of this really works out well for flyball & dock jumping!   She's brand new to dock jumping, but of course has taken to it quite quickly, as she did with flyball.  While not being the "jock" of the family (which she promptly stole that title from Stella), she thoroughly enjoys playing with (torturing) her sisters Oso, Stella, & Vaera; and herding the entire family around the house/property.

Einstein was loved, owned and handled by both Ralph and Barbara Darrow. Einstein was born July 15, 2001 in Shingletown, CA on a working cattle ranch. He was a 57 lb. Border Collie, 24" high at the withers. His NAFA flyball titles included FD, FDX, FDCH, FDCH Silver, FDCH Gold, and FM. He also competed in dock jumping, and was the 2005 International Sportsmen's Expo Champion. His dock jumping titles included Shasta Splash Senior and Pro Jumper; Splashdogs Pro Jumper and Bronze Senior, and DockDogs Senior and Master Jumper. He was the foundation dog for Shasta Splash Dogs, and one of the foundation dogs for Strike Force Flyball Racing Club.

He was also been introduced to Frisbee, Herding, Agility, and Canine Freestyle Dancing. He enjoyed watching TV, and his favorite shows included anything on Animal Planet, and America's Funniest Home Videos. Einstein crossed over to the Bridge on May 1, 2008 after a brief bout with cancer. His loss is deeply felt, and our love will be forever undiminished.

Luke left this world unexpectedly in May of this year due to an apparent heart attack.  Luke was a fun loving dog that would stop at nothing to get his toy or the bird he was after.  In 2004 I started competing with Luke in Dock Dogs and when the year finished he was ranked officially at number eight in the nation.  He was unbelievable on the docks at 90 pounds.  Luke loved the water and when we were driving and we were approaching water he just knew it and would start to whine like a little baby.  In 2004 he was ranked as the number one Dock Dog on the west coast with a personal best in competition of 23’ 8”.

When not doing his jumping, hunting, or playing with his numerous toys, Luke was as sweet of a dog as one could ask for.  He was a gentle giant with my kids and all the kids he came in contact with.  Although not fond of many adults, Luke loved every kid like there were one of his.  Men were not a favorite of Luke’s either but he loved Ralph Darrow like he was his own.

While hunting Luke always seemed to find trouble.  As a young pup out learning how to pheasant hunt he once ran over the side of an embankment and plunged some thirty feet below.  Luckily there was a pond there to catch him but I should have known at that minute we were in for a long ride with good old' Luke.  The year we competed in Dock Dogs I decided to keep him from hunting because of his little mishaps in the field.  As pheasant season was closing though I thought, "You  know Luke is a hunting dog first and a Dock Dog second", so I decided to take him out one time even though the National Dock Dog Finals were to be held in about four weeks.  Well Luke did as only Luke could do.  You guessed it, while chasing a downed pheasant he ran through a barbed wire fence like it wasn't there and caught a barb in the chest that tore him 17 inches down the middle.  Oh it's times like that I will remember forever.  Not to mention having to carry a 90 pound dog about a mile thinking my best friend was going to bleed to death right there before my eyes.

Luke left this world way to soon.  I miss you Luke you big old' knucklehead and I will see you again someday my friend.
